Working together to help you live better.

We’re multidisciplined – architects, designers, workplace consultants, technologists, project managers and marketers – all working together to create spaces where people can live the way they want.

So how did it all start?

“We aren’t architects at the beck and call of developers. We’re in a position that gives us more control and freedom to do things exactly how we think they should be done.”

Creating a better environment for everyone.

We’ve always believed that, through careful and considered design, we can help make the world a better place. We can enhance communities and connect people together. And that belief has always driven every design we created and every decision we made. But as time went on we grew increasingly frustrated with developers dumbing down the design of their schemes, all for the purpose of short-term profit and gain. So, we decided to set up as both architect and developer. A position that gives us more control and freedom to deliver our vision and create a better environment for everyone.

    What's your ethos?

“It’s about creating spaces where people thrive because the design has been drawn around them, for them, with their needs in mind.”

    People-first design.

We believe that developments shouldn’t be created in a formulaic way. They shouldn’t be driven by profit and planning. We started out with the purpose of improving people’s lives and enhancing communities through design, and this belief still drives each and every one of our projects. For us it shouldn’t be all about the balance sheet. At the end of each year, we measure ourselves on what we’ve given back to people in a community – how we’ve made a lasting difference to their lives.

How does your work affect the wider community?

“We’re conscious and respectful of the neighbourhood around us and work hard to devise spaces that create a sense of belonging.”

    Creating neighbourhoods.

Our work can have a big impact on communities. That’s what we care about – and that’s why we put them at the heart of everything we do. Each and every area is uniquely different, with its own character and history, and its own unique potential. So we’re always conscious and respectful of the neighbourhood around us and our projects, and work hard to devise and deliver schemes that not only create a sense of belonging, but also enhance the community it belongs to and unlocks its potential.

    What’s your approach?

“There is this notion [in architecture] of building in the landscape, but we never think of it from inside looking out. We start from the inside. This isn’t a traditional approach, it’s non-conformist but it ensures that people come first.”

    Andrew Budgen

    Founding Partner

    Respectful of everyone’s needs.

We get to know the area and the locals by carrying out in-depth research on the area and hold visioning workshops, where we model the neighbourhood and proposed scheme within Virtual Reality. This means that the locals and potential residents can get a fully immersive experience of the design and gain a better understanding of the space and how it all connects together before it’s built. We listen to their feedback, ensuring that we are truly delivering a scheme that benefits everyone. It’s not just our vision, it’s a collective vision. No compromise.

And what does the future hold for urbanlab_?

“It shouldn’t be all about your balance sheet. At the end of each year, we measure ourselves on what we’ve given back to people in a community – how we’ve made a lasting difference to their lives.”

    It’s all about innovation.

We’re constantly experimenting and innovating; developing new methods and technologies to push ourselves and our projects forward. All with the purpose of creating space so people can live their lives better. For example, we’re exploring ideas of modular construction and 3D printing. We’re also working closely with our sister company, sense_, who have developed a sensor to help us better understand how people use the space, informing future design decisions. They can even help to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, saving energy costs. So everyone wins.
