Mixing it up at The Rise

The Rise is a collection of 6 new apartments, all with outside space, set within a classic Victorian detached property in Lewisham.

From the outside, The Rise is typical of the charming Victorian period properties that line Clarendon Rise and the adjoining streets. On the inside, the space has been completely reimagined by award-winning architectural studio spacelab_ to create 6 contemporary styled apartments designed for modern living.

We talked with spacelab_ director Kara Carter to discover the thinking behind the interior design choices and how the original building space has been maximised, inside and out.

“When we started to play with the spatial layouts of the building we quickly realised we could maximise its spatial potential by both extending at the rear and by excavating the existing basement to create a lower ground floor flat. These interventions mean each of the flats now has its own private outside space – be that a private garden or balconies – so important for reasons of wellbeing.

The interior design aesthetic is minimal but not cold, we’ve chosen a natural colour palette that’s warm and light in tone – carried through the sandstone kitchen colour way, terracotta clay tiles, natural tone of the wooden floors that have been stripped back, and where new floor space has been added we’ve used reclaimed floorboards to retain the character.

It’s all about finding a balance that’s in keeping with the period nature of the property – respectful of the bay windows and original architectural detailing – while looking for moments where we can introduce refinement and modern intervention.”
